Get Ready for International Cook With Your Kids Day

Featured Geek Culture Health Parenting

icwykd-featuredSaturday, October 15th marks the first ever International Cook With Your Kids Day. The goal of the event is to encourage parents and kids to cook together to help promote more healthy eating.

We learned early on that it’s almost never too early to have your kids start helping with cooking, even if it’s with small, harmless things like dumping some water into a mixing bowl. Our son quickly progressed and can now chop, stir, and measure out a lot of things. We even let him “cook” on the stove with the flame on (under very close supervision of course). Obviously ever child is different, but not only has it made him more invested and interested in what he eats, it’s also made him a better eater. When we put a plate of food in front of him, we never know if he’s going to eat it or reject it. However, he’s never rejected food that he helped make!

So how can you participate in International Cook With Your Kids Day along with GeekDad? We’d like you to share your favorite recipes you make or would like to try to make with your kids with us. You can post the recipe here on the site in the comments, or post it to us on Twitter or Facebook. Later this week, the writers of GeekDad and GeekMom will be sharing their favorite recipes with our readers as well. On Friday, we’ll share your recipes with all of our readers so those without recipe ideas or folks wanting to try out something new can participate. Finally, on Saturday, October, 15th, which is International Cook With Your Kids Day, cook your recipe, or one of ours, with your kid, and share photos of you and your family cooking was us on social media with the hashtag #LookWhatWeMade.

Need some help getting started? I have two recommendations for you. The first is a great cookbook I’ve covered before—The Help Yourself Cookbook for Kids by Ruby Roth. The second is the new Ben’s Beginners website. This website was created by Uncle Ben’s to help families with lessons and recipes that are good for preparing meals with kids.

NOTE: Although International Cook With Your Kids Day is sponsored by Uncle Ben’s, we’d be encouraging this behavior anyway, just because of how helpful it’s been to us.
