In this, the era of on-demand viewing, there aren’t many television show intros that survive the impatience of my fast-forward button. One distinct exception is the opening crawl for Game of Thrones. I consider it the calm before the storm, a primer of reflection preceding the drama to follow. The title visuals are great, but it’s the Game of Thrones theme music that really stirs me. Like the opening notes of John Williams’ Star Wars theme or the rock-western nuances of an Ennio Morricone score, Ramin Djawadi’s Game of Thrones theme transports you to another time and place.
Djawadi is about to open that musical portal to Westeros on the road, as he embarks on a 28 city tour dubbed the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience.
With a full orchestra and choir in tow, Djawadi will recreate the musical highlights from all six seasons of Game of Thrones live, on-stage. While the music is sure to be the heart and star of the show, the tour will also feature a new, immersive visual experience that will take audiences across the various realms of Westeros. Tour organizers promise a state-of-the-art concert going experience.
I can only imagine what to expect, but how epic will it be to stand before the great Wall of the North while a full orchestra performs the stirring “Watchers on the Wall” from season 4. I’m also hoping to see a dragon soar as the choir angelically performs the season 3 track “Mhysa,” or a full rendition of last season’s brilliant “Light of the Seven,” my favorite of all of Djawadi’s Game of Thrones arrangements (listen below).
The tour is set to begin on February 15th, 2017, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. From there, the tour moves across the US until closing with a performance at Portland Oregon’s Moda Center on April 2nd. Details on all 28 dates can be found on the tour website.
