On Saturday, August 20, 2016, at 8:30 pm ET, the CBC will be broadcasting The Tragically Hip’s final concert and you can watch it anywhere in the world.
If you are unaware of who The Tragically Hip are, they are Canada’s iconic rock band. They have gained some following outside of Canada, but here, they are Canada. Many of their songs are representative of Canada and the small places within.
Earlier this year, the lead singer Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Shortly after, The Tragically Hip announced their final tour. Tickets sold out within seconds, with some shows adding additions seating with a rear view of the stage because of the high demand. Those extra seats also sold out within seconds, leaving many crushed. I was one of those crushed because The Tragically Hip has been a very important soundtrack of not only my life, but my children’s lives.
Thankfully, the CBC–Canada’s national broadcaster–was able to secure the rights to broadcast their final show live from their hometown of Kingston, Ontario. And you can watch or listen to it anywhere in the world, pretty much from any device.

Been listening to Road Apples a lot at work lately. One of my all time favorite “no filler” albums – not a single bad track. Had no idea about the lead singer. Thanks for the info about their final show.
“Up to Here” is one of my favorite albums of all time. I saw them years ago at Cabaret Metro on their Road Apples tour. I’m very sad about Gordie, and this is a privilege for all of us to watch the final show.
Excellent band. Have caught The Hip many times in concert, starting when they played a show at my university in the mid-eighties (and yes, that dates me). Highlights include the Great Canadian Party at Molson Park in 1992 for Canada’s 125th birthday and media access for concert photography at Stratford’s Ovation Festival in 2006. Will be watching tonight on CBC –the bigger the screen the better and crank it loud.
