Originally published in Russia, this tableau-building card game pits players against each other as they attempt to build the creatures of their dreams… or nightmares!

Players start with five cards, each with a part of a beautiful but creepy Night Terror. During a turn, players play a card, draw a card, or discard a number of cards and draw back up to half that many. The objective is to complete a Night Terror by assembling feet, a body, and a head, in that order.

Once completed, some cards have abilities that will trigger, giving players a chance to draw and play cards, destroy opponents incomplete nightmares, or even cannibalize their own creatures. Gameplay continues until one player reaches the agreed upon number of completed nightmares, typically five.

We’ve played many rounds of this beautiful game over the last two months. Each game produces an amazing tableau of nightmare creatures, mix-and-match monsters from the four Legions of Horror: the blue Necronauts, the yellow Insektoids, the red Homunculi, and the green Chimeridae.

The art on the 108 Night Terror cards is amazing and really takes this game to another level.

Nightmarium is for 2-5 players, ages 10+, and takes about 20 minutes to play. Aside from disturbing images, it could definitely be played by ages 7 or 8 and up, though the nuance of the creature abilities may be beyond younger players.

  1. I think the mix and match of the cool artwork in itself makes the game interesting. But is my understanding correct – game is really all about being first to complete the 5 nightmares?
