Twitter is a fickle mistress. Things get tweeted and removed, accounts get compromised, stuff happens. This has all served to make me incredibly skeptical. (But who am I kidding? I can’t blame my skepticism solely on Twitter!)

Still, when I noticed a particularly odd tweet from the official Nintendo of America account this AM, I was intrigued but unconvinced. And then the inevitable announcement email rolled into my inbox.

Yes, while we won’t be seeing the long-rumored NX this holiday season, this November 11th will see the release of this spectacular blast from the past.

Priced at $59.99, the NES Classic is a miniature replica of the iconic Nintendo Entertainment System. While it, sadly, doesn’t appear to support classic cartridges, it does come bundled with a single NES Classic controller (a second controller can be purchased for $9.99 or your existing Classic Controller/Classic Controller Pro can also be used), an HDMI cable for output directly to your high-def television, and a selection of 30 fantastic onboard titles:

Balloon Fight™
BUBBLE BOBBLE
Castlevania™
Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest™
Donkey Kong™
Donkey Kong Jr. ™
DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE
Dr. Mario™
Excitebike™
FINAL FANTASY®
Galaga™
GHOSTS’N GOBLINS®
GRADIUS™
Ice Climber™
Kid Icarus™
Kirby’s Adventure™
Mario Bros. ™
MEGA MAN® 2
Metroid™
NINJA GAIDEN
PAC-MAN™
Punch-Out!! ™ Featuring Mr. Dream
StarTropics™
SUPER C™
Super Mario Bros.™
Super Mario Bros. ™ 2
Super Mario Bros. ™ 3
TECMO BOWL
The Legend of Zelda™
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link™

    1. Lots of people do–especially now that Android emulators are so ubiquitous. And that’s not even taking into consideration all of the original NES systems that are still functional; those things were built to last!

  1. The inclusion of Zelda and Zelda II is enough for me to click the buy button. I like ROMS, as M suggests, but playing with my sons using the original style controllers will be fun, and the portability is great.

    1. The formfactor is a big deal for me too. This is gonna be my “take it on vacation in case of inclement weather” console.

    2. I never had an NES, so I’ve never played Zelda & Zelda II – those alone will probably land this in my house.

    1. That one I kinda expected. For me, the big surprise was Simon’s Quest! I wonder if I still remember all those old gameplay tricks?

  2. When I first saw, I was of the mind that I despite having a few actual NES consoles and numerous Retrons, I would buy one because, hey, it’s a mini NES that would look great with all my other Nintendo stuff. But I agree with Z, this looks potentially great for travel. I wish it used the actual NES controller port so that the new controllers could be used on actual NES and Retron systems.

    1. Oh, that would’ve been a great option! I’m now wondering if there’s a Game Boy Classic in our collective future… although I’ve already pre-ordered Hyperkin’s Smart Boy.

  3. I can’t wait for this! 🙂 I just wish we can pre-order this now! 😀 I’m sure it’ll be sold out everywhere almost instantly!

  4. I just recently got 2 systems and games from my parents house, but this might be worth it considering what Adventures of Link and a few others on the list that I’m missing go for to get the cartridges.

  5. Is there any way we can subscribe to updates on this article? Specifically the pre-order information? I need this in my life!

    1. I would assume that they’re still going to have their 8-bit graphic quality, because nostalgia, but it connects to the TV with an HDMI cable, so my guess would be yes.

      1. That or else it’s going to be 4:3 with silly ornate borders instead of black bars on the left/right

  6. Is there an email list I can get on to be notified when we can preorder? I really want this in my life, of course with the optional extra controller. ;). Finally something I am better than my children at game wise:)?????

      1. Don’t sweat it, y’all; I’ll post a separate specific message once pre-orders start popping up. Just keep an eye on the RSS or our social media accounts.

  7. I want to preorder !!

Only need the dragón quest saga and i dont see it in the list, i miss dragón quest 3 🙁

    1. No word yet on retailers, but I can’t imagine this thing will be a store exclusive. I imagine it’ll show up via the normal big box and online marketplaces (Best Buy, Target, Amazon, etc.).

  8. Does anyone know if this uses emulation of does it really have the games built into the circuitry?

    1. Based purely on the images available (not to mention its size) I assume it contains a small solid state drive with the core OS and the same specialty ROMs Nintendo uses for its eShop service. Now, whether it’ll support expansion and allow players to download additional titles is the big question–though I figure at this price point it’s probably just a fixed system.

  9. This looks great but would be better with Mike Tyson’s Punchout and Super Tecmo Bowl instead of the included substitutes. Also Tetris.

    1. I’m wondering what was the thinking behind including Super Contra instead of regular ol’ vanilla Contra and the sequel rather than Double Dragon.

  10. *Note that an AC adapter for the USB cable is required to play the system but is not included in the packaging.

  11. Game Stop will let you pre-order the extra pro controllers that connect Via Bluetooth right now. The systems are not on pre-order just yet.

  12. I think Amazon UK is the best place to check for preorders, considering the Pound has gone down, so its a win-win situation. Other than that Z, please do let us just know whenever pre-orders are available. I’m outside EU and US, so buying this should best be done though pre-ordering only! And I’m super-excited to have this. Its a real collectible from the 1980s! Indescribable!
