One Final Splatfest

final splatfest

It is with a heavy heart and an itchy trigger finger that I, at last, acknowledge what other Wii U gamers have long since accepted: this month marks Splatoon‘s final Splatfest.

For the uninitiated, the Splatfest is… was a regular fan event held within what I still consider the Wii U’s crowning achievement, Splatoon. Each Splatfest managed to transform this venerable squid-based shooter, first by asking players to pledge allegiance to one of two teams–with themes as varied as “Autobots vs. Decepticons” to “Marshmallows vs. Hot Dogs”–and then by literally transforming the game on the day of the tournament itself.

The day of the Splatfest, Inkopolis Plaza, the game’s central hub, became a madcap block party complete with lights and fireworks and live music provided the Squid Sisters. Moreover, the Splatfest mode alone represented your sole public multiplayer option for the duration of the ‘Fest. You fought for your honor, for your team, for your very existence as a fan of <insert random thing>.

The theme of this final chapter in the Book of Splat? Callie vs. Marie. Yes, this time, the very Inklings who personified our deliberate (or sometimes, I’ll admit, totally arbitrary) Splatfest allegiance get their well-deserved moment in the spotlight.

While voting began on July 4th, the event itself doesn’t begin until Friday, July 22nd. This means where’s still plenty of time to choose your side and practice up!

  1. Wow, a final Splatfest. So no way to obtain sea snails to trade with the jerk that is Spyke ever again. And after Spyke rips me off of my last Splatfast snails with crappy rolls, my poor sea snail count will forever remain 0. Sad. :`-(
