Making Rey’s Portion Bread From ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

I’m not sure where I went wrong, but my kids don’t really like Star Wars. Even so, one of their favorite scenes in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is when Rey traded some salvage to Unkar Plutt in exchange for a bit of polystarch which she takes home, combines with water, stirs, and in a few seconds turns into a nice little loaf of bread.

So naturally, we were delighted when we stumbled across a recipe for Rey’s Jakku Portion Bread over on StarWars.com.

This is what Rey’s Portion Bread is supposed to look like. Image: StarWars.com.

The recipe calls for just a few ingredients—most of which you probably already have in your cupboard (with the possible exception of matcha)—and it takes less than a minute to cook up a portion. Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons cake flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon matcha powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
The ingredients that will make Rey’s Portion Bread. Rey wasn’t available for the photo shoot, so Luke and Boba stepped in.

Directions:

  1. Place the oil in a mug and swirl around to grease the inside.
  2. Add the cake flour, sugar, matcha powder, baking powder, and salt into the mug, stirring together.
  3. Pour in the milk and vanilla, then cook in the microwave on high for 45 seconds.
  4. Let cool slightly and serve.

And while this recipe doesn’t have the instant-rise capability of the movie version (which was done entirely with practical effects), the 45-second cooking time makes it seem pretty close to instant.

In the same article linked above, Chris Corbould, special effects supervisor for The Force Awakens, said that the film version “probably tasted terrible,” and “you wouldn’t want to eat it.” But there’s enough sugar and matcha in this microwaved concoction that we found it to be a nice treat, even if it was a little on the chewy side.
