This week, we have an amazing conversation with Cecil Castellucci, author of many fine books, including Odd Duck, The Plain Janes, Star Wars: Moving Target, and the upcoming Shade the Changing Girl for DC Comics’ Young Animal imprint and Soupy Leaves Home for Dark Horse Comics.
Cecil has had an incredibly diverse career, and we do our best to touch on much of it – from her days at the Fame high school in New York to her time in an indie rock band to her more recent YA and graphic novel work. We chat about contributing to the Star Wars universe, charting an experimental course with Gerard Way on the brand-new Young Animal books, gender-swapping the character of Shade (who was previously Shade the Changing Man for DC’s Vertigo line), and dipping her toes into the world of opera. (She’s written a comic book opera and is currently working on a hockey opera!)
