Logarithm Sleuth ‘The CS Detective’ Excerpt

Books Computing Geek Culture Software

TheCSDetective-MainOur friends at No Starch Press are doing something a little different with their latest offering–The CS Detective. The first half of this novel by Jeremy Kubica will be serialized as free downloadables.

Jeremy Kubica is a principal engineer at Google working on machine learning and algorithms, with a PhD in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University and a B.S. in computer science from Cornell, so it should come as no surprise that his fictional work is tightly tied to his real world expertise.

Frank Runtime is a detective who uses, among his other tools, search algorithms to solve the case. While it is a work of fiction, each chapter introduces a new twist and a new algorithmic concept, ending with a technical summary. The CS Detective is part fun fiction and part learning experience.

If you’ve any interest in fun new twists on the detective genre, or you’re a computer science person wanting an easy way to learn about search algorithms, The CS Detective is for you! And with the free downloadable serialized chapters, you can even check it out to see if it’s your cup of tea before committing to buy the book!
