I thought Wicked Cyclone at Six Flags New England might have one of the best names for coasters in New England, but now there’s the Phobia Phear Coaster at Lake Compounce in Connecticut, which opened on May 7th. (Guests can purchase Buy 1 Get 1 Free Regular Admission tickets on the park’s website that are valid for use through May 22nd.)
I’m not sure if the Phobia’s name is brilliant or terrible but it certainly catches the attention, and that means it’s done its marketing job.
How scary is it?
I haven’t ridden it yet but here’s how the park describes it:
Phobia features an inversion at 150 feet in the air—one of the highest in existence and the tallest in the Northeast. Guests will experience speeds of 65 miles per hour with many exciting and unique elements including multiple launches, a twisting heart-line Inversion, and ascending and descending twists.
For those who need a translation from coaster-speak, that means the coasters flips upside down and back again while 150 feet in the air.
According to the park’s press office, the ride operates with an “advanced” magnetic launch and power modulation systems. It’s even green-friendly. Sort of. The ride “utilizes high-tech military grade hardware designed to dramatically reduce high-end power requirements in order to lower peak demands on the regional power grid.”
But, the real question: is it fun? Here’s a video of the ride, from the front seat. I haven’t decided yet if it’s terrific or terrifying. I’m guessing it’s both.
I just went on it for the first time today. It really isn’t as scary as it seams, the whole ride is over in a minute. It’s really a great coaster. I know 8 year olds who love it now that’s saying something. Also if by now u haven’t been on it you should give it a try.
