Any week we can chat about Jim Henson with someone who actually worked with him is a good week. And when that person also worked on The Dark Crystal, then even better. But best of all? When that person also happens to be the man responsible for three of the best characters in Return of the Jedi: Admiral Ackbar, Salacious Crumb, and the (non-CGI “special edition”) Sy Snootles.

This week, we welcome puppeteer and performer Tim Rose to the show. In addition to those characters from Return of the Jedi, Tim was also the performer for one of the Skeksis (the Treasurer) in The Dark Crystal and Tik-Tok in Return to Oz, and he was one of the people who brought Howard the Duck to life. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

We chat with Tim about working with Jim Henson (he also worked on Labyrinth and The Great Muppet Caper); why we may never see anyone with Jim’s kind of vision again; the path that led him to Lucasfilm; his thoughts on the Star Wars special editions, which famously replaced many of the puppet characters, including his own Sy Snootles; and Salacious Crumb’s antics on set.

We also reference a hilarious story about Harrison Ford on the Jabba’s Palace set during filming of Return of the Jedi. Click here to read the story in all its glory.

And yes, we prod a little about Episode VIII, his role as Admiral Ackbar and who might be taking over as voice in light of the recent passing of Erik Bauersfeld.
