The Great Big Beautiful Podcast, Episode 60: Tom Bancroft

You can listen on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and YouTube; you can follow the RSS feed; or you can listen right here!

This week, we’re joined by veteran animator – and all-around great guy – Tom Bancroft. Tom has more than 25 years of experience in the animation industry, and much of that time was spent with Walt Disney Animation. His career at Disney began with Roger Rabbit (on the Roller Coaster Rabbit short), and he worked up through the ranks on films such as Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Mulan (where he was supervising animator for Mushu).

Through his work at Disney and a couple of very successful art instruction books (Creating Characters with Personality and Character Mentor) that have become textbooks on the subject, Tom is one of the go-to guys in the industry for character design.

Indeed, Tom founded Taught By a Pro, which delivers online animation courses where students can learn from the best character designers, illustrators, writers, and animators. He also cohosts The Bancroft Brothers Animation Podcast with his twin brother Tony (who was a guest on this show way back on episode 17). Their show is a goldmine of information if you’re an animation student and just plain fascinating if you’re a fan. I highly recommend subscribing and adding it to your regular rotation.

Tom also has a Kickstarter that’s currently running (until May 21, 2016) for beautiful 52-page, hardcover Art of Tom Bancroft book. You should totally go back it!
