Sisterhood Soap, $10

Soap_Product

Sisterhood Soap is hand-milled by refugees escaping ISIS. The soaps are made with olive oil and eucalyptus, and look lovely. Mother’s Day purchases include a card that will arrive for the moms in your life as the soaps take up to 6 weeks for delivery from Iraq. The only thing better than a beautiful gift for someone you love is knowing it’s also helping another mom care for her family.

The Amazon Echo is perfect for the tired, busy mom who sometimes forgets to order things. Sometimes your mother doesn’t even know what the weather will be yet everyone will ask her each morning. Help your mother by getting her the Amazon Echo: everyone can ask Alexa instead!

Silhouette Cameo, $299.99

Several of us here at GeekMom and GeekDad have the Silhouette Cameo, a die cut machine that offers a lot of flexibility if you like to create your own designs. We are obsessed with it. Cut cardstock, make vinyl decals, use it to cut fabric for applique. There are whole Facebook groups devoted to Cameo-obsessed crafters who make everything from custom wood signs (use it to make stencils) to t-shirts using heat transfer vinyl. You’ll fall down a rabbit hole of ideas for things you didn’t even know you needed to make.

Amazon Fire HD 8″ Tablet, $149.99

We had a look at the 8″ HD Fire at Amazon’s summer press event in New York City. The screen is crystal clear, and the 8″ is a great size for watching videos, using as an e-reader, or keeping around the house to look up recipes and tutorials. It’s light and portable, so you can throw it in your bag and take it anywhere.

Adobe Creative Cloud, plans starting at $9.99 per month

This is Adobe’s most up-to-date suite of developer software and image libraries available via the cloud on a subscription basis. Adobe Creative Suite provides professional image editing (raster), illustration (vector), and page layout (prepress) tools that allows some of our writers here to geek out and make children’s picture books about computer programming. It also includes video editing tools for creating the perfect videos to showcase their creations. Yes, one can get other tools that would allow users to play for less, but they just don’t work as well. If you want to relax and let your creative juices flow, you don’t want to be fighting with the software. In addition to access to programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Adobe Premiere Pro, subscribers also have the option to access Adobe Stock, the company’s curated repository of over 50 million photos and videos available for use.

This portable home security camera is great for checking in on the kids when they get home from school, or even for making sure the new puppy isn’t tearing the house apart. You can use the Circle app to talk through the camera. But if you want to get creative, use the Logi Circle to document your next party. Use the Day Briefs feature to get a 30 second clip of everything that happened during the day. It’s a very cool way to watch a big event unfold.

Fracture: Photos Printed Directly on Glass, $18 and up

Fracture is a company that takes one of your digital photos and prints them directly on to the surface of a single piece of glass, resulting in a very clean and futuristic way to display a photo. The hanging mechanism is built into the back of the glass so the end result is a stunning image and nothing but that image. Skip has given this as a gift (as a gift card) to his own mother and she absolutely loved it. He was able to include several digital photos for her to choose from but she didn’t even need the provided images…she already had an older image that she immediately knew she wanted displayed and this was the perfect way to display it. It’s a very unique gift with a personal touch since it typically involves family photos.

Give the gift of weather data! With spring here, many of our mothers enjoy spending time outside, whether in the garden, getting some exercise, or enjoying the kids play. AcuRite’s line of professional quality weather stations provides everyone in the house instant access to temperature, humidity, wind, pressure, and rainfall data, and those who are more tech-savvy can even set up the system to share the data through assorted weather crowd-sourcing websites. GeekMom Patricia has had her AcuRite weather station for 3 years and it’s performing reliably as the day she took it out of the box.

game of thrones

It’s an irritating trend. Everyone gets together to visit, and the smartphones come out. This clever game turns the formerly isolating practice into a reason to be social once again, and still enjoy smartphone tech. No flip phones invited, unfortunately, but who says you can’t play with a partner?
