Storm Entertainment presents the first tribute comic book biography after the death of the fantastic rock god, David Bowie.
This is a fantastic introduction to the life and adventures of Bowie, from his early days as David Jones to the persona we know today. However, as you can imagine, the sheer richness of Bowie’s life make this a slim attempt at best. I haven’t read the prequel, Fame: David Bowie, but I imagine that several graphic novels would be needed to follow him through his entire career.
Written by Mike Lynch and Michael L. Frizell, with art by George Amaru and Vincenzo Sansone, the book attempts to pay homage to this influential artist: portraying his constant changes and reinventions, as well as some of the most iconic concerts and turning points in his life. There are lots of interesting facts presented that I was unaware of, being someone who likes Bowie but wasn’t always paying attention. For example, I had no idea that “Space Oddity” was written so near NASA’s 1968 moon orbit event.
However, I feel some more of his lyrics should have been included. Bowie thought deeply and shared his ideas with his audience; I understand the effort put into this graphic novel, but I feel much more could have been accomplished.
As a first introduction, though, it works wonders. I would say it is very approachable for teenagers and young readers curious about David Bowie’s life and career–since he was at the forefront of so many musical movements.
