Southwest Maker Fest Happening This Weekend

Mesa, Arizona, will once again host the Southwest Maker Fest, a collaborative one-day festival and gathering for a community of makers seeking to achieve the “vision of a connected community, empowered by creativity.” The event will take place on Saturday, March 12, 2016, in the heart of downtown Mesa from 12pm to 7pm and is free to the public. With a projected high of 74 degrees and light cloud cover you almost couldn’t ask for a more perfect day to take the family out and see what’s going on in the Maker community!

The signature event of the Arizona SciTech Festival, the Southwest Maker Fest will include musical acts such as indie/pop/folk artists 76th Street, 3D chalk art installations, welding and forging demonstrations, Galileo microcontroller workshops, and much more. In total there will be more than 100 exhibitors, workshops, presentations, and performers at the festival. Some of the featured events are:

  • Creative Catalysts, an under 40 Leadership and Engagement Program of the Mesa Arts Center in collaboration, with artist Owen William Fritts of Flagstaff will be leading a community build directed at creating a permanent installation for the Mesa Arts Center. The artist-led project take place throughout the day and allow participants to create a group of awnings and “human nests” out of recycled tree branches.
  • The i.d.e.a. Museum (Imagination, Design, Experience, Art) will be open and free from 9am to 7pm on the day of the event. The Museum’s current exhibition is titled, “Underwater FantaSEA,” which allows visitors to explore the depths of the underwater world and discover their connection to the ocean.
  • A grand-finale fashion show entitled, “At the Edge” which is billed as being, “unlike any fashion show you’ve seen before.” This show will combine fashion design with wearable art, technologically enhanced clothing, 3D printed clothing, hair sculptures and much more.
