First (way back in the Stone Age of 1998), it was a D-list team of superheroes from the pages of Marvel Comics. Then it was given new life in the phenomenal 2014 feature film, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Now, Big Hero 6 is coming to the small screen. Or rather, I should say, it’s set to premiere on Disney XD in 2017. But regardless, for fans of the film and characters, this is welcome news.
Emmy Award-winning producers Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, creators and executive producers of Kim Possible, are the executive producers. The two also worked together as producers on the Hercules series and as executive producers on Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and The Penguins of Madagascar. So it’s safe to say they’re coming to San Fransokyo with just a smidge of television animation experience.
The series will pick up immediately following the events of the film and continue the adventures and friendship of Hiro and Baymax. Along for the journey are – of course – Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Fred, and Go Go. As the new prodigy at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Hiro now faces daunting academic challenges and the social trials of being the little man on campus. Off campus, the stakes are raised for the high-tech heroes as they must protect their city from an array of scientifically enhanced villains.
The show is the latest in a series of shows for Disney that capitalize on existing IP and explore the storytelling potential of each. Star Wars Rebels is probably the most well-known of the bunch, but Disney has been cranking out a slew of solid shows with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister 6, and The Lion Guard (based on The Lion King). Also announced are LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures and a Tangled series (also set to premiere in 2017), along with the perennially-in-development DuckTales.
The Big Hero 6 series was just announced today, and this is all that’s officially been released. I reached out to get some more information about cast and number of episodes, but that information is still forthcoming. Stay tuned, and we’ll update you as we get more information.
Still, I think we can all agree that more Go Go Tomago is a very good thing.
This is sooooooo awesome! Big Hero 6 was a fantastic movie and definitely deserves a follow up.
It’s really no surprise, so much modeling has been done already for the characters, Take “how to train your dragon” and Kung fu Panda. It reuses so much of the CGI that was already done for the film.
I look forward to this, and more animated films becoming tv shows.
