Sometimes it seems like Funko is taking over the planet (or at least a significant amount of the landfills on our future planet). Seriously, think of a 25th century archaeologist unearthing a million Funko Pop! figures and then imagine what that research paper would say about us. But we live in the early 21st century, and it’s hard to deny that those figures are just adorable, gosh darnit!
At this past weekend’s New York Toy Fair, Funko revealed a new line of 5-inch vinyl figures called Rock Candy, and I’m in love. The line will debut in two waves. Wave 1 will release in May and feature a handful of DC Comics heroes (and villain). We’ll see Batgirl ’66, Batgirl of Burnside, classic Wonder Woman, Batman vs Superman‘s Gal Gadot Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, and DC TV Supergirl.
Wave 2 is a bit out of left field for Funko. It’s coming in July and consists of a variety of (surprisingly attractive) Barbie designs that span the decades, from 1959 Swimsuit Barbie to 1986 Rocker Barbie. Listen, I’m not a Barbie fan, but I have to admit to being intrigued by these designs.
The Rock Candy line is simply described as featuring “the most powerful women around.” That description and these awesome designs have certainly combined to form a stellar first impression. I saw the DC figures on display at Toy Fair, and they look phenomenal, but I wasn’t able to pick them up or handle them. Nevertheless, I think we can safely assume that they’ll live up to their surprisingly reasonable $9.99 retail price.
With the number of licenses Funko has acquired for their Pop!, Dorbz, and vinyl product lines, I think it’s also safe to assume that this is just the tip of the iceberg for Rock Candy.
So what do you think? Will you be clearing some bookshelf space for these? Which characters are you most hoping to see in this line? I’m putting some money away now for General Leia, Sabine Wren, Lady Sif, and Hermione Granger.
