Playmates has been killing it with the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy line, and their latest addition–T-Sprints–is no exception. We were sent the four turtles–Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and Raphael–although there are also T-Sprints of Master Splinter, Shredder, and Triceraton as well as a playset.
The first thing I noticed when opening the package is the mini catalog. My son couldn’t have cared less about this at his age, but it immediately brought back some old feelings of being a kid and wanting to check off all the boxes of all the Transformers, GI Joe, and TMNT figures. I’m glad Playmates is still carrying this torch.
Inside each package is a T-Sprint figure and a vehicle. The figure itself is where all the action happens. The figure has a single wheel in its base that, when pushed along a hard surface, propels the toy forward–it’s not a pull-back toy. As the toy drives itself forward, the arms pump. Conveniently all of the Turtles have two weapons, except for Donnie. To balance the toy out, he is holding two sticks instead of his bo staff. A minor infraction in my opinion, and I like to think he upgraded to something more like Mockingbird’s weapon of choice. The vehicles don’t actually do a whole lot other than act as a shell around the figure. They are fairly loose, so this resulted in some funny sideways driving vehicles.
I was a little worried my two-year-old wouldn’t be able to really get them to work as they take a little more finesse than a standard pull-back car, but not only did he get them to work just fine after a couple of tries, he really loves these toys. They are his first TMNT toys he’s owned (he has played with some at his friend’s house so he does recognize them) and he insisted they come in the car with us and even watch him brush his teeth.
Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles T-Sprints are a fun, relatively inexpensive toy for young kids to enjoy TMNT and race around on the floor.
I’m considering these for my son’s birthday. My question……do they work on carpet? We have standard carpet. Not berber, which is hard and flat, and not really fluffy. Standard. If they don’t work on carpet….there’s no use in me getting them.
Unfortunately not – they worked fine on our hardwood floor but even on our most extremely flat and rigid floor rug they won’t go. They rely a lot on momentum so anything that causes friction between the tires and the surface will limit their ability to roll. You could push them around and rey will still flail their arms but that limits the fun quite a lot.
