Goodbye, Alan Rickman

There are plenty of obituaries out there this morning for Alan Rickman, so we won’t repeat it all here. This is just a short, sad note, meant to let us share our grief over the passing of an actor who played so many great characters so damn well. He could make you root for the bad guy, realize the bad guy was really a complicated, tortured good guy, laugh at the meta-satire of playing an actor who hated his character, and so much more. His voice and delivery were textbook examples of “droll” and “biting,” and gave us so many quotable lines. And through it all he left us wanting more.

Goodbye Alan Rickman, you will be missed.

  1. “Death comes for all us in the end.” ~ Snape

Goodbye legend. You left your legacy and you’ll never be forgotten!

  2. This has been a bad week for me. Bowie and now Alan Rickman. I associate so many happy thoughts and good memories with both of them and the art they helped bring to life. I am happy that we live in a digital age where their works can be preserved to look back on by their fans and probably the future generations as well.

  3. What an incredible loss! From Han’s in Die Hard 1 to Snape in Harry Potter, Alan was the dark character persona! When he spoke his lines you where locked to every word and syllable! He took the English language to a new level and added character to it. Truly a remarkable actor. He will be missed by all.

  4. It was Alan Rickman who got me hooked with Shakespeare’s sonnets. I try to find consolation in the fact that he might have liked this one:

No longer mourn for me when I am dead
Then you shall hear the surly sullen bell
Give warning to the world that I am fled
From this vile world, with vilest worms to dwell:
Nay, if you read this line, remember not
The hand that writ it; for I love you so
That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot
If thinking on me then should make you woe.
O, if, I say, you look upon this verse
When I perhaps compounded am with clay,
Do not so much as my poor name rehearse.
But let your love even with my life decay,
Lest the wise world should look into your moan
And mock you with me after I am gone.

Thank you for sharing your art, Mr. Rickman, and rest in peace
