When we watched the original Star Wars trilogy recently with our older girls, our toddler watched most of it with us. (We would pause the movie to get her to bed, and then continue watching.) It’s not clear how much she really understood what was going on, but she definitely learned to recognize some of the characters like R2D2 and “Creepio” and Yoda.
This week when we went to our local game store, she saw a plush goblin from Pathfinder and asked if it was Yoda. Then she wandered over to the LEGO area. I saw her looking at the LEGO Friends sets, and went to the next section to pick some Pathfinder minis. When it was time to leave, she ran over, grabbed the X-wing set, and toddled back to me, saying, “Daddy, you should buy this!” Believe me, I was tempted.
And then there’s Darth Vader. When he first appeared on the screen, she started mimicking the sound of his breathing. When the Imperial March started playing, she stood up and danced! Lately she keeps asking us to sing the “Star Wars song”–sometimes she means the theme song, but quite often what she really wants to hear is Darth Vader’s theme instead.
She’s latched onto my copy of Tom Angleberger’s Beware the Power of the Dark Side!, the middle-grade novel based on Return of the Jedi, even though it’s mostly text with just a few illustrations scattered throughout. (Note: it’s the one with Darth Vader on the cover.) I keep finding it at the dining table, where she’s pulled it off the bookshelf to peruse.
To top it all off, yesterday I caught her on the baby monitor after she woke up from her nap, singing to herself:
Yes, the Force is strong with this one. But she seems to be leaning toward the dark side.
Oh, man, I thought that my toddler singing the Jaws theme in the bath was cute, but I think you win with that video.
Next time you get the chance, sing Dr. Suess’s “Hand, Hand, Fingers Thumb” to her using the Imperial March music – it tracks very well (may have to throw in an extra “hand” every once in a while.

my toddler sings the death march all the time. glad to know mine is not the only one. he even gets his red and green lightsabers and battles himself.

I think all nine of my kids have sung that song at one time or another when they were toddlers. It’s such catchy tune! 🙂 Congrats for your video going viral. Very cute. 🙂
Well, this is fantastic. What are your thoughts on taking her to the new movie? 😉
We’re considering it—she’s been to just a few movies in the theater so far (usually shorter kids’ films) so I know she can handle at least some movie in the theater. On the other hand, I don’t want to have to skip out and miss things myself because she’s cranky or noisy. So … we’ll see. Definitely going to take my older daughters and my wife!
Our little man used to sing this all the time, and we have it on video too. Also have a cool vid of him lip synching to some Star Wars movie quotes hehe

Well, this is awesome. What are your thoughts on taking her to the new movie? ?
She’s still not great in movie theaters—we’ve taken her to see a few kids’ animated movies in theaters, but she just does better watching on our TV in a more well-lit room, where we can pause it if she needs to go to the bathroom, etc. For Force Awakens our older daughters got to see it in the theater, and she watched it later when it was available to purchase; same for Rogue One. I think we’ll probably do the same for Episode VIII.
