If you didn’t stay up to watch Jimmy Kimmel last night, then you might not have realized that there was a rather special trailer debut…
Heart rate up? Pupils dilated? Mouth a little dry? Don’t worry, you’re just experiencing Marvel Trailer Syndrome. Let’s talk through it, shall we?
While I’m not thrilled with the rehash of the “old white guy tells Cap (who’s really an old white guy himself, but I digress) that the government doesn’t like him anymore” plot line, it fits well with the character arc introduced in Winter Soldier. Cap has been fighting to establish his identity since he was thawed out and it looks like he’s decided to fight for what’s most important to him, even if it means going against the establishment that’s been built up around him (but is it bad that I got bored as soon as I saw Cap in his “might-as-well-be-another-uniform” undercover outfit?).
What I find curious is that Tony is on the side of that same establishment. Maybe one of those frequent explosions we saw in the trailer happens somewhere where innocents are injured (like in the comics). Otherwise, this is a big shift for Iron Man – going from eye-rolling bored genius to government enforcer. Then again, the break between Cap and Tony has been widening for a while now; and it sounds like he truly does feel betrayed at the end of the trailer.
But enough with the plot speculation. Let’s talk about the shiny stuff! We get a couple of millisecond shots of Black Panther! The costume looks amazing and I can’t wait to see how he fits in to things. Falcon’s on his way to a proper superhero costume with the addition of white and red details on his wings (his traditional comic colors). And that fight between Bucky, Cap, and Iron Man at the end! Well, I say “fight” but what I mean is “relentless beat down.” I could watch Buck and Cap toss the shield back and forth all day – that bit of coordination was glorious. I want way more Scarlet Witch and Black Widow than we get, though – considering Hawkeye is on Cap’s side, I’m very curious to see where Natasha ends up.
Captain America: Civil War drops on May 6, 2016. It looks like it’s going to be a heck of a ride.
