I backed Scythe on Kickstarter (which Dave Banks reviewed earlier), and in a recent update Jamey Stegmaier mentioned that the game had been included in a webcomic, Tiny Wooden Pieces. I hadn’t heard of it, so I went to check it out.
Started in spring 2014, Tiny Wooden Pieces is written by Colin O’Mahoney and illustrated by Aileen Cudmore, who live in Ireland. The comic touches on all sorts of games: Settlers of Catan, Dominion, Marvel Dice Masters, Arkham Horror, and more. But where it really excels isn’t just throwing around names of games, but really finding the humor in the details of tabletop gaming: sleeving cards, buying expansions, tabletop etiquette, analysis paralysis, and so on.
They post one cartoon every Friday, and I went back and read the whole run over the weekend. There are a few instances of PG-13 language (for instance, in the Arkham Horror strips) but for the most part I think it’s kid-friendly. And for non-gamers, the references are often (but not always) explained in the blog post below the strip.
If you play tabletop games or just know some tabletop gamers, I highly recommend checking it out.
