I have long been of the opinion that Disney’s Aladdin is all about Genie. Sure, it features the titular street rat, a strong-willed princess, a diabolical villain, and a veritable menagerie of animal sidekicks, but I’ve always thought of it, first and foremost, as an undeniably amazing animated Robin Williams vehicle. In the wake of Williams’ untimely death, this manic performance as a 10,000-year-old genie has continued to serve as a substantial addition to the groundbreaking comedian’s already lofty legacy.
Just this week, Disney re-released the 1992 masterpiece in a brand new Diamond Edition. It comes packed with an impressive set of features, not the least of which being that this is the first time the movie has ever been available on Blu-ray and Digital HD.
I can’t imagine a plot recap is in order, but suffice it to say Aladdin has never looked–and its award-winning soundtrack has never sounded–better. As with the previous Disney Diamond Edition multi-packs, you get the film on DVD, Blu-ray, and digitally, making it easier than ever to watch this family favorite practically anywhere at any time.
In addition to this myriad of formats, Aladdin‘s Diamond Edition also comes packed with bonus features. With a special look at the partnership of directors John Musker and Ron Clements, an examination of Aladdin’s translation from film to the Broadway stage, an “Unboxing Aladdin” featurette exploring the movie’s many Easter Eggs, and a selection of deleted scenes and songs (including a demo of “Proud of Your Boy“), it certainly offers a lot of bang for your buck.
There are also a couple of special features that die-hard Robin Williams fans will particularly appreciate. “Genie 101” explores Genie’s various transformations and celebrity send-ups, while “Genie Outtakes” provides a look at the Genie bits that didn’t make it to the big screen.
If you and your family are already Aladdin fans, this version clearly stands out as the definitive edition both with regard to quality and content. If, however, you’ve never shared the magic of Aladdin, Jasmine, Abu, and Genie with your kids, there’s certainly no time like the present.
