The tragic civil war in Syria forces thousands of people to flee their homes daily with no more than the clothes on their backs, overwhelming the ability of most neighboring nations to provide assistance. Public and private organizations around the world have slowly responded with outreach operations. The geek world has been no different.

Worldbuilders, a non-profit charity organization started by author Patrick Rothfuss, has stepped up to the challenge of raising money for refugees of the war. Earlier today, Pat posted to his blog an emotional response to the tragedy of several hundred thousand people living without even basic necessities. His post deserves reading, but can be summed up thusly, “This is just about helping people who are in desperate need of help.” Worldbuilders is donating 100% of the proceeds to Mercy Corps, a charity already on the ground providing food, water and shelter for thousands of refugees. As a bonus, both Rothfuss and another anonymous donor have provided matching funds up to $75,000 so far. If you’re interested in contributing, check out the Worldbuilders page here, and give what you can toward providing aid for other humans in a time of unfathomable hardship and greatest need.
