The PAX 10

The PAX 10 best indie video games of the year have been announced. This eclectic group of beautiful and original games will be available for viewing at PAX Prime 2015.

PAX is the insanely popular gaming convention begun in 2004 in Seattle and having since expanded to three more locations; Boston, San Antonio, and Australia. PAX was created to give the general public an E3-like experience. With concerts, the Omegathon competition, console free-play, League of Legends competition, a stimulus-ridden exhibit hall, panels, and tabletop gaming, PAX offers up more than anyone could hope to experience in four days.

Every year at PAX Prime (what the original PAX convention in Seattle is now called), fifty industry experts pick the best ten indie video games of the year. The ten games are selected based on their gameplay and “overall fun-factor”; presented as The PAX 10, they are all available for you to experience in a designated PAX 10 area.

With games such as Darkest Dungeon where you play a band of adventurers that not only have to deal with the physical dangers of a dungeon crawl, but the psychological traumas as well, “Darkest Dungeon focuses on the humanity and psychological vulnerability of the heroes and asks: What emotional toll does a life of adventure take?” Check out the GeekDad review of Darkest Dungeon from Steam Early Access.

Darkest Dungeon Gameplay
“Darkest Dungeon is a challenging gothic RPG about the stresses of dungeon crawling. You will lead a band of heroes on a perilous side-scrolling descent, dealing with a prodigious number of threats to their bodily health, and worse, a relentless assault on their mental fortitude!” – Text and picture from www.darkestdungeon.com.

Other original PAX 10 games include the Adventures of Pip where the player starts as a single pixel character in a classic side-scrolling platformer, and Battle Chef Brigade, a fantasy cooking and hunting game where players must first hunt exotic ingredients such as dragon, and then prepare quality dishes.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a ticket to PAX Prime this August, then spending some time in the PAX 10 area playing these games and talking with their creators is a definite must. However, if you’re like most of the rest of the poor PAX-less souls who will not be attending PAX, then maybe you can experience a taste of PAX Prime 2015 through these creative and original games.

  1. Hearing any GeekDad/Mom writer talk about being Pax-less makes me sad, as I loved the Raising The Next Generation… GeekDad/Mom panels…

  2. GeekDad has submitted a panel for PAX Prime 2015, “GeekDad and GeekMom: Raising Geek Generation 2.0”. PAX is still in the approval process for panels, so we don’t know if we’ll be accepted or not. Glad you enjoyed the past panels!

And to lessen your melancholy, I actually have secured some tickets. So at least this GeekDad is not PAX-less this year.

  3. And we just received confirmation that “GeekDad and GeekMom: Raising Geek Generation 2.0” is a GO for Sunday, 12PM in the Wyvern Theatre!
