One of the best things about summer is camping. Being outdoors enjoying the fresh air is tough to beat, even if there are bugs and the occasional bear to deal with. I’m starting to pack for a two week camping trip and our kids can’t wait to be off, despite the fact that means leaving the Xbox and TV behind. Thanks to iPads and other portable electronics they’re hardly roughing it, but even the draw of exploding pixels usually isn’t enough to keep them from tearing around exploring the campgrounds.

Not sure about the whole wilderness thing? If you live in Ontario (Canada) or happen to be visiting  in the next week or so, Ontario Parks has announced it is waiving day use fees at all provincial parks on July 17. The Healthy Parks, Healthy People promotion lets you experience a provincial park for free, taking advantage of activities like hiking, fishing and swimming. In addition, some parks are holding special events like camping workshops, yoga on the beach and guided hikes.

Many GeekDad readers are located in and around Toronto and there are over 20 provincial parks located within 125 miles (200 km) of the city. So there’s no excuse: pack the kids in the car and head out to enjoy the great outdoors for the day at an Ontario Park on July 17.
