Deadline recently announced that The Wicked + The Divine, a comic by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie, as been optioned by Universal TV. It will be produced through Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Milkfed Criminal Masterminds.
As a long time fan of all four of these amazing comic creators, I am super excited about the possibilities for this show. I’d be really scared if Universal was planning to do this on their own, but with Fraction and DeConnick being involved, I think The Wicked + The Divine is in pretty good hands.
For those not in the know, The Wicked + The Divine is only a year old but has also garnered several awards. The basic premise of the story is that there is a group of people knows as the Pantheon, and, as the name suggests, they are modern incarnations of gods from many pantheons. The story is told from the perspective of Laura, a fangirl who desperately wants to be a god herself. The story is a spectacular look at modern culture, our obsession with fame, power, and spirituality.
Even if you have no plans on watching the show, do yourself a favor and check out any of the work Gillen, McKelvie, Fraction, or DeConnick have done. Their comics should definitely be in your pull list if you love great stories.
