Fans of The Sixth Gun comics from Oni Press probably already know about the Kickstarter in progress for a brand new RPG set in that universe. Funding within the first hour, the Kickstarter opened on May 26th and will end June 25th. The game uses the Savage Worlds RPG system and borrows several mechanics directly from the Deadlands series. For those unfamiliar with Savage Worlds, the games primarily focus on roleplaying and storytelling, with simple mechanics for combat and skills.

If you want a better idea of how the game will work, check out these sample adventures (here and here) teased with the Kickstarter campaign, or visit the Pinnacle website for more information on the Savage Worlds RPG system.

Backers recently unlocked two new major stretch goals, both of which add to an already impressive list of additional content. The first, for reaching a goal of $54k, adds a new adventure module that crosses the veil between worlds to unite The Sixth Gun universe with the Deadlands, another western-themed RPG world. Since both properties deal heavily in the crossover between parallel worlds, they seem perfectly suited for a crossover. The second stretch goal adds a printable copy of several additional materials for all backers, including several creature features and some new comic art.

I had the chance to speak with Scott Woodard, the author of The Sixth Gun RPG sourcebook, and I came away from that interview more excited than ever. Scott is a true fan of the source material, and seems genuinely excited to have this opportunity. He says the most challenging aspect was “where to draw the line” when pulling from the source material. The world of The Sixth Gun contains so many details that could easily be overlooked, leaving a wealth of history for exploration. For example, Scott has fleshed out the town of Brimstone using the limited glimpses seen in the books, describing in detail at least two streets in the town, complete with building details and dimensions.

He also seemed incredibly pleased with the storyline for the $54k stretch goal, which he says he just found out about shortly before the big announcement. The storyline sounds intriguing, as it melds the worlds of The Sixth Gun with the Deadlands setting, in what Scott describes as a very “cinematic” story. He even read the tagline – “Two halves of a powerful relic, separated and dropped into parallel realities…” – in a very Don LaFontaine voice. If the goal is reached by the 25th of June, Scott and Cullen Bunn will complete this “epic adventure” module, which already has the concept art below, as a fully playable add-on.
