I admit, I’ve been harsh on the new Supergirl series. Mainly because of something we keep bringing up in our Same Geek Channel reviews of Arrow and The Flash: that is, the showrunners don’t seem to write women well.
May have to eat my words with this trailer though.
I loved this. Loved it. There’s a sense of heroism as a calling, not something you do because of dark tragedy, and just a sense of fun.
The show description reads as follows:
SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime. Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Arrow”), Ali Adler, Sarah Schecter and Andrew Kreisberg are executive producers for Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The pilot was directed by Glen Winter (“Arrow”).
Little bits like Jimmy Olson knowing Superman’s identity, Cat Grant as a media mogul, and the DEO are all from the comics; new to the Supergirl universe is that Kara has an adopted sister. This should be fun.
We’ll be reviewing at least the pilot for “Same Geek Channel,” and may be sticking around.

One thing I find interesting is that you can easily draw parallels to the Jem trailer that came out yesterday, except everything that did wrong this does right.
Little niggles aside, I really liked it. It’s nice to see female characters in a DC property that don’t make me want to strangle the writing team. I find myself wondering if we’ll see Kal-El at some point, and whether or not the show will cross over with the CW shows.
Per the discussion between the GeekDads, supposedly it is stately explicitly in creator Berlanti’s contract that Supergirl CAN cross over to Arrow and Flash.
Except then we have to wonder why Superman never got a mention before now.

I saw a couple of folks elsewhere writing some snarky posts comparing the Supergirl trailer to the Black Widow parody from SNL a few weeks ago. But honestly, I think they are getting it wrong. Supergirl is all about being bright and heroic. Supergirl should convince little kids all across America to run around the house with a bath towel around their neck.I was truly impressed with what I saw.
This looked bloody fantastic to me and I won’t lie, this is really about the first I’ve paid any attention to SG. When I read the post title I was pretty *blah*. Then I watched the trailer and I’m anything but *blah*. I’ll make a point of watching this one!
Anyone that complains about there being too much ‘girl stuff’ in there really needs to watch some old Smallville or even Flash and Arrow. Costume problems? Yep. Relationship issues? Yep. Snarky bosses? Yep.
Also: the bit about using the name Super*girl* was brilliant.
