Keys. Wallet. Smartphone.

Say it with me folks: Keys. Wallet. Smartphone.

Such is the mantra of the modern man, the three essentials one must always have on hand before venturing into the wilds of the outside world.

But what do you need for going on a real adventure? Believe it or not, just those same three items. (And you could probably get by with just your smartphone.)

Here are four handy apps that can help make any impromptu trip a success.

SAS Survival Guide – The perfect app for a weekend on the road, in the woods, or anywhere else you may roam. This app brings to life the popular book written by former SAS soldier and instructor John “Lofty” Wiseman. It includes everything from helpful photo galleries and how-to videos to a sun compass and comprehensive First Aid section. Price: $5.99 w/ IAP

UrbanDaddy – An ideal app for a night out on the town with your best friends, UrbanDaddy helps those visiting the biggest metro areas of the U.S. find the very best places to eat, drink, and be merry. Just tell the app what city you’re in, the neighborhood you’re near, and whether you want food or drinks. Price: Free

Popmoney – Figuring out who owes what for gas, hotel rooms, beer, and other incidentals during a weekend adventure can be a nightmare. Popmoney, GeekDad’s newest sponsor, allows users to pay each other back using the recipient’s email address or mobile phone number. No muss, no fuss, no counting out loose change. Price: Free

Passbook – On my return trip from Las Vegas back in January, I was handed an amended paper ticket by a very helpful Delta employee. It honestly took me a few moments to process what it was and what I was expected to do with it. Passbook is the perfect place to store all your tickets, store loyalty cards, and gift cards digitally. They’re there when you need them, and out of sight when you don’t. Price: Free (iOS only)
