You know that amazing cosplay idea you had last year at Denver Comic Con? The one with all the leather bits, welded accouterments, and authentic period buttons and stitching that was going to make women gasp and strong men weep?
You have two weeks to finish it.
Don’t worry; you’re not alone. Last year I had these grand plans to outfit the entire family as characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was going to be both a nod to my favorite animated series, as well as a subtle dig at M. Night’s atrocity as our entire family is incredibly white. Now, I’m sitting here in my office googling “last minute cosplay” and “bald comic book characters”.
(Hey, writers! What’s up with all the bald guys being villains? Kingpin, Lex Luthor, Dr. Evil, Ironmonger, Red Skull, Ming the Merciless, Voldemort, Walter White… the list goes on and on. If anyone has any good bald guy cosplay ideas that aren’t Professor X, please let me know in the comments. Right now I’m leaning towards Powder; everyone loves ’90s movie references, right?)
However, if you are one of the dedicated that stuck with it, or you’re just good at improvising on short notice, this year’s Denver Comic Con has plenty to offer to the cosplay community. Cosplay panels and demonstrations will be held in Room 301 all weekend long, and there is a special stage for cosplay photography in the atrium by the big blue bear. This is a great opportunity to make some new geeky friends; as you walk the convention floor, look for others who are dressed as complementary characters and set up a time to meet for a group photo. Avengers, X-Men, and Lord of the Rings group photos are all fun, but don’t forget to look for the less-than-obvious relationships–e.g. “The Doctors” (Who, Evil, Strange, Doom, Doofenshmirtz), “The Captains” (Mal, Picard, America, Jack Sparrow), etc.

More information regarding cosplay rules and events can be found on the DCC website. I’ll be doing the media thing all weekend, so if you see a guy who looks like he’s cosplaying Michael Stipe, Moby, or [insert generic bald white dude here], be sure to say hi. My kids will also be joining me on Saturday, doing their best Jimmy Olsen and Peter Parker.
Be respectful, have fun, and I’ll see you all there!
