‘TableTop’ Visits the Land of 1001 Nights with ‘Five Tribes’

Tabletop Games

This week on TableTop, Wil and friends Jenna Busch, Satine Phoenix, and Richard Garriot play the awesome worker displacement game, Five Tribes. (Read our review.) It’s a great game and the one I called my game of the year in 2014.

However, when the game came out last year, there was tremendous push back that one of the resources in the game was slaves. While Days of Wonder stated that the use of slaves, while politically incorrect, was historically accurate with the theme of the game (Arabian Nights). No matter, many people got shouty and Days of Wonder acquiesced and the reprint that came out last fall replaced slaves with fakirs. That’s great, but when TableTop shot season three, the reprinted cards were unavailable. So this week’s cast uses the slave cards, but refers to them as “helpers” instead.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, please watch the episode. It’s such a great game and it is worth owning in your collection, despite the controversy. And if you already own Five Tribes, make sure you get down to your friendly local gaming store next week for TableTop Day. There’s an exclusive Wil Wheaton djinni card that awards points for every djinni you control. Super powerful!
