Paramount Television announced that they are working on a TV series based on Galaxy Quest. Pretty much every Star Trek fan, if not every sci-fi fan, holds this sci-fi comedy in very high regard–perhaps second only to Spaceballs.
Robert Gordon, the writer of the original film, will be writing the new series so fans can expect the show to stay true to the film. No details are yet available, but I cannot wait to see what they do with Galaxy Quest as a series. We might not have a Star Trek series on TV, but I’m hoping this show will scratch that itch.
Personally, I rate it far above Spaceballs. Spaceballs is parody, but Galaxy Quest is satire, and razor-sharp at that.
Agreed, I love Spaceballs, but if both are airing at the same time, I’d watch Galaxy Quest.
I think I need to watch both again as soon as possible. I think Spaceballs has more nostalgia for me than Galaxy Quest but in thinking about it, Galaxy Quest IS a better movie.
That’s fine until some A##hole starts shooting up your nose then Spaceballs is the better movie. They even have merchandising.
To be technical, galaxy quest is a tribute. Space balls is parody. I’d argue true satire is starship troopers.
If by “Starship Troopers” you mean Paul Verhoeven’s abortion, yes. If you mean Heinlein’s book on which he claims it’s based, but which in reality shares only a title and the names of some characters, no. Heinlein’s book is a lesson for young people couched in an adventure story.
Seriously, Paramount? You already own Trek! Why just make more Trek?!?!
Will it be Netflix? If not it won’t be worth watching.
Good question! They haven’t given details about where the show will land (network, cable, Netflix). But it will be interesting to see which way they decide to go!
My first reaction was: I hope Paramount does the movie justice. My second was: Really, Spaceballs? Really?
I love some Mel Brooks but GQ is far and away better than SB. Call me a pessimist but I think this is a disaster waiting to happen. Let’s hope I’m wrong.
I would be a bit more skeptical if Robert Gordon wasn’t on board, but that really gives me hope.
I will watch this movie anytime I find it on TV. One of my all time faves.
I hold my tentacles in a vertical arrangement and make a happy clapping noise.
