Free Online Class Taught by Stan Lee

Stan Lee is teaming up with the Smithsonian to teach an online class this May called The Rise of Superheroes and Their Impact on Pop Culture. Am I signed up? Uh… hells yeah.

The class doesn’t begin until May 5th, but I wish they would release the reading list early so I could get started because I’m sort of champing at the bit over this. It’s one thing to read a book like Superman in a vacuum. It’s quite another to get to discuss the history of superheroes with Stan Lee and other fans for 5 straight weeks.

It has been a long time since I’ve been a student: about 15 years since graduate school ended. Signing up for a class–even just an online, 5-week one–has brought out my inner student. It makes me want to line up my pencils and get a new notebook. I cannot wait for this.

So who is joining me? Anyone else taking Stan Lee’s superhero class?

  1. So glad you let everyone know about this course, this is why I come to geekdad,, to find out about cool stuff like this! Thank you!! I’m signed up to audit the course, but I’m thinking about paying for the verified certificate just so I could see the original artwork and have Stan Lee’s autograph.

  2. I sincerely hope that Melissa Ford learns (before May 5th) that Superman is not in Stan Lee’s universe 🙂

    1. I sincerely hope that Paul reads (before May 5th) the course description in the link so he sees that Stan Lee is covering well beyond his own work.

  3. I hope this delves much deeper into the mythic-unconsciousness on the level of a Joseph Campbell study. It will raise people’s consciousness as to why and how we gravitate towards beings with god-like abilities, who yet retain grounding in everyday humanity.
