Pac-Man and Donkey Kong Invade Earth in First ‘Pixels’ Trailer

Movies Videogames

Sony has just released the first trailer for Pixels, the new comedy based on Patrick Jean’s incredible 2010 short film of the same name. Pixels takes place years after the launch of a space probe stocked with ’80s media and recordings, much like Voyager. Among the collected media on board was a series of classic video games, from Donkey Kong to Pac-Man. Aliens misinterpret the games as a threat, creating real and massive incarnations of the game characters, including literal Space Invaders, and sending them to earth to pixelate humanity. The only people who can save mankind are a bunch of gamers. Crazy premise? You bet!

What I like about this trailer, and the film’s concept in general, is that it presents a fun premise that feels a bit like Ghostbusters or Men In Black. Yes, Futurama did something similar, but still, I like the family-friendly, geek-centric vibe. The tone might be a little campy, but with Director Chris Columbus behind the film, and a cast featuring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, and Brian Cox, I’m giving Pixels the benefit of the doubt.

Pixels is set to hit theaters later this summer.
