The secret word of the day is “Netflix.” Fans of Pee-wee Herman can rejoice today as “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday” has just been announced, his first feature-length film since 1988.
“Bowtie is the new black,” quipped Pee-wee Herman about the new movie, which is being produced by Judd Apatow (Anchorman, Bridesmaids).
In a groundbreaking move, Netflix will premiere the film through its online streaming service worldwide.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos says about the decision:
“We didn’t hesitate for a moment knowing that Pee-wee’s Big Holiday was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation.”
Dreamt up 4 years ago by the film’s producer Judd Apatow and Pee-wee’s alter ego, actor Paul Reubens, “Big Holiday” is a project they are both excited to work on. Says Apatow:
“As a fan of Pee-wee Herman since he first appeared on The Dating Game, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the brilliant Paul Reubens on this film. It is a dream come true.”
“Pee-wee’s Big Holiday,” written by its star Paul Reubens and actor, writer, and producer Paul Rust (Comedy Bang! Bang!, Arrested Development), will be directed by first-time director John Lee (Wonder Showzen). It is described as “a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny.”
Filming begins in 3 weeks.
