Disney Cruise Line to Take ‘Star Wars’ to an Island Far, Far Away

Ever since the wedge shaped facade of an Imperial Star Destroyer first crept into my life from atop the opening screen of Star Wars, I’ve dreamt of intergalactic travel. I fondly remember pretending that my bedroom was a Star Destroyer bridge en route to some far off world. I was ready for science and technology to make strides that my 8-year-old brain couldn’t really comprehend. I was ready for the future Star Wars had shown me.

Fast forward some 22 years, and practical me is here to rain on my own parade. Lets face it, and I’m sorry to be a bummer, but we’re not likely to see a Star Destroyer in our lifetime. So what happens to those of us who grew up dreaming of traveling alongside Luke, Leia, and Han, galaxy hopping in search of our own Jedi path? Do we give up on the dream? 8-year-old me would say no, and probably find my lack of faith disturbing. Luckily, my kids keep my sense of wonder intact.

Last week, Disney announced that their Disney Cruise Line would be offering Star Wars Days at Sea. Use your imagination for a second. Take a massive, wedge shaped super-vessel, say, a cruise ship, and add a majestic sky full of stars, perhaps like you’d find over open ocean. Now add a cast of characters from a galaxy far, far away, and that Star Destroyer fantasy is a close reality.

darare268231In 2016, Disney is offering eight special West Caribbean sailings aboard their Disney Fantasy vessel. Star Wars Days at Sea will feature everything from meet-and-greets with favorite characters like Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, and Stormtroopers, Star Wars-themed activities, special effects shows, a shipboard version of the popular Jedi Training Academy experience, screenings of Star Wars films and the new Rebels series, encouraged cosplay, and more. In the evening, the ships adult night clubs will be transformed to look like the Mos Eisley cantina scene, characters, cantina music, and all.

Additionally, each sailing will include different Star Wars celebrities and insiders who will share their experiences, meet fans, and sign autographs. Those guests are yet to be announced. Stay tuned to their website for dates and announcements.

Beam me aboard! Oops, wrong franchise.
