Tis the Season — For Cheap Apps

Did your kids score a new iOS device for Christmas, or maybe you treated yourself to a new iPod, iPad or iPhone over the holidays? I’m pretty psyched myself after receiving an iPad Mini with Retina Display to replace my much-loved (but showing its age) original iPad. Loading an iPad up with games is a heck of a lot cheaper than investing in the cartridges needed to fill up a 3DS library and the holiday season is the best time to stock up on iOS games. Many developers have some of their top titles on sale for up to 90% off. No line-ups, no parking hassles and you don’t even have to change out of your PJs — just log on to iTunes. For even bigger savings, check for stores that have iTunes cards on sale. If you don’t mind venturing out to stock up on cheap iTunes gift cards, you can knock another 10 to 20% off your purchases.

A few examples:

Square Enix has StarFinal Fantasy V on sale from $15.99 to $7.99, along with many other titles at reduced rates.

Aspyr Media has a collection of discounted games including $4.99 for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Electronic Arts has over 40 titles down to just 99 cents. My favorite mobile time waster, StarThe Simpsons: Tapped Out was already free to play, but EA is having a holiday sale on donuts (the in-game currency) for those who get tired of grinding for premium upgrades.

It’s not just games; there are educational apps on sale too. And if you have an Android device, many of the game developers are on board on Google Play as well. Sale times vary by publisher, so if you see something you like at a great price, now is the time to snap it up.
