Halloween is a time when kids can pretend to be all things, from monsters to movie characters and superheroes. But for a lot of kids, role-playing is a fun pursuit that they practice year-round. For kids (of all ages) who think about capes and superpowers nonstop, Jason Ford’s new book, The Super Book for Superheroes, should have a home in their fortresses of solitude.
With an eye toward drawing and coloring, the book has lots of activities and things to consider before battling the forces of evil. In addition to a pop-out superhero and a couple of design-your-own masks, there are lots of little drawing lessons. Kids can learn how to draw superheroes standing, running, and flying. Super vehicles, ray guns, and secret headquarters are waiting to be filled in and other items, like utility belts are waiting to be colored. It’s all excellent groundwork for drawing an original superhero comic and Ford includes some empty panels toward the back of the book, for just that purpose.
If your crimefighter isn’t big on drawing, there’s still lots to do — secret codes, stickers, and thought exercises (like what can the superhero see in the truck with his x-ray vision). All in all, it’s a superfun book with over 125 pages of things for superkids to do. If you’ve got a burgeoning superhero in your life, The Super Book for Superheroes is worth checking out.
