We’ve been testing out the MiniBoom in the robot room for about a month now. It’s getting plenty of play time when we’re building or programming the robots. The styling of the MiniBoom is sleek and smooth with a high gloss black plastic finish and curved metal grill. A lighted indicator sits front and center while the touch controls are concealed beneath the gloss black top.
The touch controls lack any tactile feedback but the lights do dim slightly when touched. Controls are as expected. volume, play/pause, skip track, call answer and cancel. I took a few test calls on the speaker and it worked well.
For the price and size, the MiniBoom comes in above average. It sounds great at lower and moderate volumes but the lack of bass becomes evident at higher volumes. To get better bass you’ll need to spend about twice the money and get a bigger speaker.
The speaker is powered by a replaceable 900mAh LiPo battery. We could easily get 6 or 8 hours of play before charging. Thankfully the speaker uses a standard USB Micro B connector.
If you’re looking for a speaker and on a budget this wouldn’t be a bad choice. I found it worked well as a background music when working with others, or just conversing. If you need to rock out, then look for something bigger and expect to spend more money.
