Shanghai’s Air Quality Girl

The happier this girl, the better the air. Image capture: Patricia Vollmer.

In this month’s Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS), I read about the work that the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center is doing to build awareness and reduce the city’s horrible air pollution. The story in the Bulletin reported that this past January was so bad, the levels of air pollution exceeded the monitors’ measurement capabilities.

One of the city’s efforts to build awareness includes pictures of that cute little anime girl above. When you go to the real-time monitoring website, you get an easy glimpse of the city’s air pollution: If the young lady is happy, all is well. As soon as she’s frowning, you should be concerned.

Do you want to drill down some? If you scroll down on the real-time reporting site, you can see a graph of the day’s pollution, plus a graph of the past week’s average levels.
