Welcome to the twelfth irregular installment of Random Geek Roundup! This is where I collect a variety of links and sites and products that have come across my virtual desk in recent days. Just because you’ve discovered a specific interesting tidbit doesn’t mean that everyone has. So in the spirit of sharing awesome, here is the next collection of links.

Cool Airplanes! And Other Art!
When I was a kid, I had a few little metal airplanes that I played with, along with my very few Matchbox cars. They were heavy, and really added to my playtime. The Smithsonian has acquired some art which is on exhibit, including a really neat photo of a bunch of airplanes, that reminds me of those planes. If you can’t make it to Washington, D.C., check out the link above.

Mixing Cultural Dishes Isn’t a New Concept
Combining foods of different origins isn’t anything new. Cultures have been doing it for centuries. It makes sense. As soon as people travel any distance, they become influenced by what they see and hear (and eat). They would bring these new ideas home with them and combine them with what they already knew. Smithsonian Magazine talks about this history. Bánh mì is my favorite one. What’s yours?

How Geeky Are You?
If your bent is toward quizes, take this one and find out just how geeky you are (at least, by the standards of the quiz maker). What is your result? According to them, I am apparently 92% geeky.

Milk: Not Just a Kid’s Drink
Just like prune juice is a warrior’s drink, milk is apparently the drink of conquerors. They had an advantage over the local population when it came to lactose tolerance after weaning. Yup, it’s a thing.

The First Sci-Fi Convention? At a World’s Fair? Where Else?
This one speaks for itself. It’s the report from the science fiction convention held at the New York World’s Fair in 1939.

Do You Smell Things Differently From Others?
I’ve always known that I’ve smelled certain kinds of foods differently from others. I always figured that people couldn’t possibly enjoy eggs or broccoli if their sense of smell was the same as mine. This article from Science Daily validates that, and looks at the genetic differences among people with different senses of smell.

That’s it for this installment of Random Geek Roundup. You can also go back and look at the links from previous Random Geek Roundups for more interesting news and websites!
