Welcome to another edition of Fund This, GeekMom’s bi-weekly series that focuses on places to invest some of your hard-earned cash. We are looking to highlight a few of the most interesting projects on crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and many more. Ready to make someone’s dream a reality?

This week, we have something for you to snuggle or maybe even set on the nightstand. Yes, it’s a doll—a Scary Godmother Doll. There are all sorts of toys for various books, movies, and TV shows. Why not one for Scary Godmother? That’s the idea behind this Kickstarter campaign.

Just in case you aren’t familiar, Scary Godmother is a series of children’s books and comic books, all of which revolve around the title character. She’s sort of like a fairy godmother, but with a witchy, Halloween twist. Oh, and she’s not really scary at all. In fact, she can actually help you to dissect all of those things that go bump in the night.

Jill Thompson has built up an excellent resume, working as an illustrator for Wonder Woman, The Sandman, The Invisibles, and more. She’s also the comic book creator and illustrator for Scary Godmother.

Soon after being published, Scary Godmother became so insanely popular that the character was optioned for animation by Mainframe Entertainment. Now, Thompson once again has the rights to her character and she’s looking to branch out the brand, by creating this spooktacular doll.

The Scary Godmother Doll is quite pretty, as well as pretty cool. After all, Thompson has been working on the project for two years. The final product will have moving joints, removable wings, and options for clothes and accessories. However, whipping up your own toy line isn’t cheap, so Jill has turned to Kickstarter to make a little magic—and a whole lot of dolls.

“This Kickstarter is to fund the production of a Scary Godmother Fashion Doll. Kind of like Barbie but much, much cooler. ;-),” Thompson writes on her campaign page. “She’s bigger, better, redder, curlier, pointier, magicky-er, and more meow than your usual dolls.”

At last peek, the Scary Godmother Doll was about a third of the way to its $150,000 goal. To secure a doll, just make a minimum pledge of $50. However, there are some other really cool perks for the different pledge levels. Digital comics, original artwork, books, a guided tour (by Thompson herself!) of Chicago, a comic book workshop, and even cookies (yes, cookies) could all be yours! Doesn’t sound all that scary now, does it? Just make sure to get in your pledge before the campaign expires on Thursday, September 12, 2013.

  1. It would be great if she would let all of the people who supported her in the first place. It was supposed to be delivered in April and it is now September and she hasn’t said anything about it since July.
