The Klingon language, the languages of Arda (Quenya and Sindarin from J.R.R. Tolkein’s novels), and Gallifreyan: What do they have in common? These four languages have been studied by many different groups around the world. But, for many years—nearly 50, actually—Gallifreyan’s secrets were all locked up. This seems mostly to be due to fans of Doctor Who knowing that Gallifreyan was its own language, one that we never got to hear. However, we’ve been seeing this language all over the series. The Doctor runs into it from time to time; most recently, he started seeing it put into use by Doctor River Song. But the secrets of Gallifreyan are unlocked now.
Thanks to Gallifreyan Academy you can learn how to write your messages in the Gallifreyan alphabet. Imagine wedding invitations, post cards, and desktop wallpapers, all written in the most circular of languages. Maybe a crib with a hidden message on the side? The Academy bases their version of Gallifreyan on the work of Sherman’s Planet.
The website reminds the reader of the all too famous programmer’s first words: “Hello, World!” It then introduces Gallifreyan’s special version: “Bow ties are cool.” It shows you how to combine circles, dots, and lines into a legible circular language, read in a counter-clockwise circle, starting at 6 o’clock.
