After many expansions, sequels, and licensed properties, Munchkin has turned to the classics — minotaurs, kraken, and Excalibur. In the newly released Munchkin Legends, the iconic card game visits everything from Greek myths like Achilles and Nordic tales like Thor to more modern legends like Paul Bunyan and the Wicked Witch of the (Mid)West.
Munchkin Legends is a full-blown stand-alone game, compatible with the original Munchkin game and its many expansions and boosters. Among the 168 cards, die, and rules in the box, Munchkin Legends features the same classes and races as the original Munchkin.
Like all other Munchkin varieties, Legends is great fun. The treasures, curses, items, and monsters are funny (“Lemming Parade” Play when you’ve failed to Run Away from a monster whose Bad Stuff does not include Death. All other players must also try to Run Away at a -1 penalty) and the art by John Kovalic is spot-on perfect.
Munchkin Legends is available only at Target.com right now and the game will be making its way into physical Target locations in late summer. No word on when/if the game will ever see the inside of your FLGS, so if you want Munchkin Legends, better head for the red dot and circle.

I have a question for any (or all) Munchkin fans out there. My 6 year old has shown interest, but I’m just overwhelmed by all the various expansions and such. There is the basic Munchkin game that started it all, but I also see a “Munchkin Deluxe” for sale that has a very vague description. Does it contain the cards from any of the other expansion boxes such as 2 or 3? I’ve played Munchkin myself, but would like to invest in a few expansions that my son will enjoy.

Hi, Jim! Munchkin Deluxe is exactly the same set as Munchkin, but it includes a game board and pawns, so you don’t have to scrounge pennies to track your levels, and has cards that show both your pawn’s color and your current sex.

I’d recommend getting the Deluxe edition if you’re going to play with kids or others who have never played before – I have a 5 adult group that plays regularly now but had never played before, and I think the board/pawns/etc made the game more accessible for them. Definitely worth the extra dollars over the standard deck itself
There is no safe bet when it comes to picking a Munchkin standalone. I would prefer Munchkin Legends as a starter or one that suits his knowledge or spark his interests (star munchkin for the science fiction buff for instance).
