This was a hard month. I really wanted to add an octopus. I didn’t want to make something cutesy, and I didn’t want to make something so detailed it would be impossible to sew. So, in the name of avoiding an overly twee design, I went dark. I wanted this thing to be a mix of Victorian biology sketch and something that Lovecraft would suggest might be waiting to devour your soul if you start reading out of that suspiciously evil looking book over there…
Did it work? You let me know. This is probably the most difficult block so far. The eyes are pretty tiny, so this might be the month you want to hand sew the appliqué, or you may want to just use thread or beads to make the blacks of those eyes. You could also skip the lighter green areas and just make it an outline with eyes if the small parts are too much.
As usual, I’ve included both regular and mirrored patterns for your tracing convenience. Be sure to print at 100%. Finished block size is 12×12 inches, so a 14×14 inch square is recommended for proper placement. Download the PDF pattern here.

Just found your site – really love these blocks. These would get a preteen or teen interested in sewing, which is a HANDY skill to have.
I was wondering when you will be publishing the instructions for doing the border – the more I look at it the more attractive it is.
I never see the blocks post to the Facebook page, and then I have to track them down by searching when I remember a month or two later! I don’t know when I’ll get to this project, but I love it and want you to know that I am collecting all the blocks.
I’ve only be able to find the blocks up to June 2013. Has the block of the month been moved? I haven’t been able to find July, August, Sept. or October blocks. thanks!!!
I am so glad to hear that the quilt is going to continue this year. I and my daughter love your work and the quilt is perfect. I am making it for her 16th birthday. I was afraid I would need to make up the rest. Thank Thank you again. I love the June block.
I just found out about this BOM and love the theme, I can’t wait to see all the rest of the blocks. So I’ll be stalking the site waiting for it.
I have to give up on this quilt, it’s been a year and no updates. This is why I don’t start quilts until I have all the blocks. Realizing you are busy, we are too. this was going to be an interesting quilt, and am sorry to have to walk away from it. Good luck to you and your family and any future endeavors.
Can you tell me if you ever finished the BOM’s for the steampunk quilt? You left off with June, and posted that you would continue in 2104 with the rest of the patterns….. Please let me know as this is a really cute idea! Thanks- Kathleen
