At long last, the “Three Flavours Cornetto” trilogy is almost complete, as we finally have the trailer for the last part of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s loosely connected trio of films that began with Shaun of the Dead and continued with Hot Fuzz. Like those two modern British classics, The World’s End is written by Wright and Pegg, directed by Wright and stars Pegg and their other cohort/collaborator Nick Frost – along with Martin “Bilbo” Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan. And just like those two films, it is not all what it seems at the outset.

Just like Shaun of the Dead was a zombie movie hidden within a romantic comedy (or was it the other way around?), The World’s End is ostensibly about a group of childhood friends reuniting after 20 years to try and recreate a pub crawl around their home town, but the teaser posters released have had stuff falling from the sky and now that the trailer is here, we can also see people with lit up eyes and mouths. Are we going to see an alien invasion movie? Or maybe a new twist on the Body Snatchers? The Cornetto in Shaun was strawberry flavoured (red for blood), Hot Fuzz‘s was the original one with blue packaging (Boys in Blue = The Police), and if Wikipedia is to be believed, and Edgar Wright himself is not leading us down the garden path, then The World’s End will feature the mint choc chip flavour – green for Aliens! Silly? Hell yes! Genius? Totally!

The trailer promises plenty of action and gags (one even taking the mick out of a scene from Hot Fuzz) and it also features a great soundtrack full of 90s rave and indie tunes. Simon Pegg is even wearing a Sister of Mercy T-shirt and Goth trench coat – now that brings back memories! And the best thing is that we don’t have to wait that long to find out now as, in the opposite to Hollywood norm, the film’s release date has been brought forward by about two months and it’s out on the 19th July in the UK and August 23rd in the US.

Check out the trailer below and prepare for total annihilation!

The official blurb…

In The World’s End, 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realise the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

    1. that look he puts on his face as they ‘go and finish their drinks’ at the end is pure class! And don’t forget the great cameos from Mark Heap and Reece Shearsmith too…
