Released on April 23, 2013, and published by Broadway Paperbacks, Ex-Patriots: A Novel is Peter Clines’ follow-up novel to Ex-Heroes: A Novel. GeekMom has an exclusive excerpt. Plus, we are giving away signed copies of Ex-Heroes: A Novel, and Ex-Patriots: A Novel, courtesy of Broadway Paperbacks, to one lucky GeekMom reader.

The synopsis of Ex-Patriots: A Novel reads:

It’s been two years since the plague of ex-humans decimated mankind. Two years since the superheroes St. George, Cerberus, Zzzap, and Stealth gathered Los Angeles’s survivors behind the walls of their fortress, the Mount.

Since then, the heroes have been fighting to give the Mount’s citizens hope, and something like a real life. But now supplies are growing scarce, the zombies are pressing in . . . and the heroes are wondering how much longer they can hold out.

Then hope arrives in the form of a surviving US Army battalion — and not just any battalion. The men and women of the Army’s Project Krypton survived the outbreak because they are super-soldiers, created before mankind’s fall to be better, stronger, faster than normal humans — and their secure base in Arizona beckons as a much needed refuge for the beleaguered heroes and their charges.

But a dark secret lies at the heart of Project Krypton, and those behind it wield an awesome and terrifying power.

  1. I’d pick mind-control, no doubt. And since I lack the power of mind control, I’ll just have to hope that I win the books, rather than force you to choose me with my super brain. Alas. (Side note to the universe: Don’t give me super powers. It would probably be a bad idea.)

  2. I’d pick teleportation. No need to worry if you leave something at home, just pop back, get it, and pop back to where you were. It would also make family travel easy. Want to go to Disney World but don’t live nearby? Just pop you and your family there, enjoy the parks, and then pop back home at the end of the day. (Just be sure to teleport OUTSIDE the gates and buy a ticket. No teleporting inside the gates. That would be wrong.)

  3. I’d go with Mystique’s shapeshifting ability. It would be so nice to change my appearance and blend in with a crowd without having to be me. It would also make Halloween infinitely more fun.

  4. I can’t decide between teleportation and time control. Though I’d probably get less exercise if I didn’t have to walk, but skipping traffic when driving would be fabulous! And if I could control time, I could get enough sleep and churn through my to-do list!

  5. Well, telepathy and telekinesis are basically a package deal, aren’t they? When you get right down to it, with enough power and training, you could do pretty much ANYTHING using those as a base for your powers. Seriously, I can’t think of any option more versatile than the TP/TK package!

  6. Whatever power I would need to go back in time, advise my 10 year old self and have [him] listen and remember. (Buy Microsoft stocks early, kid)
