GeekMom: Comic Book Corner — April 17th, 2013

Happy Comic Release Day! Welcome to another installment of GeekMom Comic Book Corner, where we recap our adventures in comics for the week.

Dakster Sullivan — Action Comics #1 — Blast to the past
This past week, I was tasked with reading some Superman stories for an online course I’m taking, Gender Through Comics. Action Comics #1 was on the list along with Superman: Birthright and Action Comics #267.

At first, I wasn’t sure I would enjoy an early Superman story.

Action Comics # 1 is the first old school comic book I’ve read. It’s also 75th anniversary of the book’s publication this Thursday, so it seemed fitting it was the first I read. From the first few pages, I could see the strong influence of the times on the characters as well as their surroundings.

I know a little about Superman’s history, so I understood why the Daily Planet and the Kents were not mentioned in this issue. One thing that threw me back a little though was Clark’s persona. There’s a scene where another character (Butch) cuts in on his dance with Lois. The way Clark carried himself and handled the situation made me feel like I was looking at Christopher Reeve.

Lois was a very strong character and could definitely take care of herself. She showed it when she handled Butch after he tried to handle her.

Overall, the story was pretty good. I’m surprised that I enjoyed even one panel of it, but then again, I’m a Superman girl of the 90s. It was interesting to see how the story progressed and the changes that have been made to Superman’s world since he was created.

Corrina– All-Star Western #18 by Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and Moritat

Fellow comic readers keep urging me to read this book and I’m not sure what took me so long because they were right. It focuses on Jonah Hex, a classic DC Western character, and places him in the Gotham City of the American Frontier time-period. This issue also features a classic DC villain, Vandal Savage, who seems to have a long-term plan for taking over the United States. But he hasn’t counted on Hex and a shotgun. The issue ends with a new status quo, as Hex is headed away from Gotham, finally. Next issues promises…Booster Gold?

There’s also a back-up Stormwatch story featuring Doctor Terrence 13, with art by Staz Johnson. It’s a little bit Sherlock Holmes, a little bit superhero, and a little bit magic. I’ll be happy to read the next installment.
