Andrew Hackard of Steve Jackson Games shows Matt Forbeck and his kids how to play Munchkin Apocalypse.

Last year, the folks over at DriveThruRPG.com, the largest store on the web for grabbing PDF and POD versions of your favorite RPGs (and assorted other acronyms) launched Teach Your Kids to Game Week. The inaugural year went so well that they’re doing it again, starting this coming Monday, December 3, and running through Friday, December 7.

Teach Your Kids to Game WeekTeach Your Kids to Game WeekAs part of the drive, a number of publishers are offering discounted or free games on DriveThruRPG.com. According to Matt McElroy, the company’s director of marketing, DriveThruRPG.com also promises to feature articles, tips and advice for how to teach your offspring all about the joys of tabletop RPGs. They’ve also established a new category on the site for family-friendly games.

Two of the more interesting games include Hero Kids by Justin Halliday (a new RPG from Hero Forge Games) and FirstFable by Matt McFarland. FirstFable is DriveThruRPG.com’s own RPG created for kids ages 4 to 10. It was specifically designed in conjunction with Teach Your Kids to Game Week. The PDF of the game is free, or you can grab both the PDF and a softcover printed version of the color book for only $6.50. They’ve released the contents of the game under a Creative Commons license as well.

So, go ahead and grab a game — from DriveThruRPG.com, your friendly local game store, or even off your own shelf — and teach your kids how to play.
